Apple Watch Companion App
What You Can Do
The Hedy Watch app works two ways:
-
Run a session on your Watch alone. Leave your iPhone in your bag or at your desk. Your Watch listens to the meeting, and the session moves to your phone the next time they connect.
-
Control a session on your iPhone. Start, pause, and stop sessions without reaching for your phone, mark important moments with a quick tap, and read coaching tips as they arrive.
Prefer voice control? You can also start and stop sessions hands-free with Siri Shortcuts.
Getting Started
The Watch app installs automatically when you have Hedy on your iPhone:
-
Make sure Hedy is installed on your iPhone
-
Your Apple Watch must be paired with your iPhone
-
The Hedy Watch app appears automatically in your app list
-
If the app is not automatically installed, you can do so from the Watch app on your iPhone.
-
Open Hedy on your Watch to start using it
Choosing Where a Session Runs
When you open Hedy on your Watch, you see two buttons:
-
Start on Watch runs the session on your Watch, using the Watch microphone. Your iPhone doesn’t need to be nearby.
-
Start on iPhone starts a session on your phone, just like tapping start in the iPhone app. Coaching tips appear on your Watch while it runs.
Start on iPhone only works while Hedy is open and on screen on your iPhone. Otherwise it’s greyed out with Open Hedy on iPhone underneath. Start on Watch is always available.
Running a Session on Your Watch
-
Open Hedy on your Watch and tap Start on Watch. The first time, allow microphone access.
-
Lower your wrist and get on with your meeting. The session keeps going with the screen off, and you can use other Watch apps in between.
-
When the meeting ends, open Hedy and tap Stop.
Your Watch then shows Sending 1 session to iPhone. If your phone is out of range, the session waits on your Watch until the phone is back. You can run several sessions in a row, and they all wait their turn.
Once your phone has the session, your Watch shows Sent to iPhone and deletes its own copy.
Importing it on your iPhone
-
Open Hedy on your iPhone. A card at the top of your sessions list says 1 session from Apple Watch is ready to import.
-
Tap Import.
-
In Import Apple Watch session, choose a topic and session type if you like, then tap Continue.
Hedy transcribes the audio and creates your summary, just as it does for a session on your phone. The session is dated to the moment you tapped Start on Watch, not the moment you imported it.
If you don’t need a session, tap Discard on the card instead. Hedy asks you to confirm, then deletes the audio.
Good to Know
-
Battery: In our tests, a session on the Watch used about 3% of the Watch battery per hour.
-
Length: A single session can run for up to 4 hours.
-
Calls and Siri: A phone call or Siri ends the session on your Watch. Everything up to that point is kept, and your Watch shows Stopped by an interruption — saved. Tap Start on Watch again to continue in a new session.
-
Don’t force-quit Hedy on your Watch during a session. You may lose the audio. Hedy tries to recover usable interrupted recordings when it opens again, but audio that cannot be read cannot be saved.
-
No speech: If a session caught no speech (for example, an accidental start), the import shows No speech found in this Apple Watch session. You can discard it. Tap Discard to clear it.
-
Free plan: Sessions from your Watch count toward your monthly free minutes, just like sessions on your phone. If you’ve used them all, Hedy keeps the session on the card so you can import it after upgrading.
-
Storage: Your Watch needs at least 100 MB free to start a session. An hour takes up about 10 MB.
-
Pending audio and account changes: Watch sessions waiting to be imported are stored on this iPhone, not in Cloud Sync, and signing out or switching accounts does not clear them. Discard any you do not want to keep. Deleting your account on the iPhone holding them clears only its inbox. It does not erase audio still on the Watch, whether connected or offline. A recording that has not yet transferred can arrive in the inbox later.
Controlling a Session on Your iPhone
While a session runs on your phone, your Watch shows its elapsed time with Pause and Stop, plus a button to mark important moments as highlights. These keep working when your iPhone is locked or Hedy is in the background.
If your iPhone drops out of range during a phone session, your Watch keeps showing the session and adds a Start on Watch button below it. Use it if you need to capture something on your Watch in the meantime.
Smart Stack Widget
Add Hedy to your Watch’s Smart Stack for quick glances at your session status. The widget intelligently shows different information based on what’s happening:
-
During recording: Shows a green indicator with elapsed time
-
When paused: Shows a yellow indicator with elapsed time
-
With coaching tips: Displays new tips so you can see them at a glance
-
When idle: Shows “Tap to start coaching”
Tap the widget anytime to open the Hedy Watch app.
Live Activity on Your Watch
While a session runs on your iPhone, its Live Activity shows status and coaching tips in your Watch’s Smart Stack. A session running on the Watch alone records audio. Its transcript and AI analysis become available after you import it on your iPhone.
Watch Face Complications
You can add a Hedy complication directly to your watch face for one-tap access. Hedy supports three complication shapes, so it shows up on most faces:
-
Rectangular (Modular, Infograph Modular) — shows session status and your latest coaching tip
-
Circular (Infograph, Meridian, Palette, and similar) — shows a status glyph
-
Corner (Infograph corners) — shows a status glyph
The glyph reflects what Hedy is doing: a microphone when recording, a pause symbol when paused, and a waveform when idle, with a label of Hedy Recording, Hedy Paused, or Hedy Ready. Tap the complication to open the Hedy Watch app.
Note: Only the rectangular complication displays your live coaching tip. The circular and corner complications show status only — they’re always visible on the face, so Hedy keeps your conversation content off them by design.
If Start on iPhone Is Greyed Out
Start on iPhone needs Hedy open and on screen on your iPhone. A locked phone, or a different app in front, counts as not open. Open Hedy on your iPhone and the button turns on within a few seconds. Or tap Start on Watch to run the session on your Watch instead.
If Hedy is already open on your phone and the button stays grey, your Watch is holding an out-of-date status. Press the Digital Crown to leave the Hedy Watch app, then open it again while Hedy is on screen on your phone. The Watch checks in with your phone each time it opens.
